Begin With a Scene
Start where the story can be seen or heard: rain striking a camper roof, an old truck refusing to start, a dog barking at the wrong visitor, or a family member repeating a familiar saying.
Preserve Voice Without Inventing Facts
Keep the phrases, humor, and rhythm that make the storyteller recognizable, but separate remembered dialogue from exact quotations. Confirm names, dates, locations, and sensitive details when possible.
Organize the Archive
Use a consistent filename, date, title, storyteller, location, topic, and permission note. Keep original recordings or handwritten notes when appropriate, and store a backup separately.
Decide What Should Remain Private
Not every good story belongs online. Protect medical details, addresses, financial information, family conflict, and stories that could embarrass or harm someone who did not agree to publication.
